A 22-year-old man ended his life by hanging himself after allegedly killing a 17-year-old girl in Palghar, police said. The minor was murdered on Friday and the suicide was reported early Saturday, police added.
According to police, the accused has been identified as Prabhakar Krushna Waghare (22), a resident of Tulyathapada in Mokhada, Palghar.
Police said Waghare had dropped out of Class 7 and had been working as a laborer on the outskirts of Mumbai.
The deceased girl was identified as Archana Laxman Udar. She was studying in class 12 and stayed in an ashramshala (residential hostel) in Mokhada, as her parents lived in a village in the hinterlands of Palghar.

Around 12.30 pm on Friday, police said Udar was going to her ashramshala with three friends, when the accused allegedly stopped her on the pretext of talking to her.
Senior police inspector Dhananjay Jagdale of Mokhada police station said, “As he wanted to speak privately, the victim’s friends stepped aside. While the two were talking, Waghare allegedly pulled out a knife he was carrying in her purse and attacked her. He stabbed her twice and fled the scene.”
The three girls raised an alarm, after which locals gathered at the spot and the police were subsequently informed. The girl was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead during treatment. Mokhada police registered a case of murder against Waghare. “While we were looking for him we learned that she had ended her life by hanging herself with a rope. There is an iron bar near a dam in Mokhada, about 200 meters from her house. She allegedly tied the rope to the bar and hanged herself,” Jagdale said. A case of accidental death was registered on Saturday.
