Kingsley Coman scored twice as Bayern Munich cruised to a 3-0 victory over Freiburg, but it was Bayer Leverkusen who returned to the top of the Bundesliga on Sunday.
Goals from Coman and Leroy Sané gave the 11-time defending champions their fifth win in seven league games and extended Freiburg’s miserable run in Munich. Freiburg has never beaten Bayern in Munich in 24 attempts in the Bundesliga.
Coman opened the scoring in the 12th minute when what looked like an intentional cross went over Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu and into the far post.
Sané made it 2-0 in the 25th when he played one-two with Harry Kane through a crowd of players before scoring his sixth goal of the season.
Sané scored again before the break, with a brilliant shot at the far post after passing the ball between the legs of a defender, but the VAR disallowed the goal for an apparent offside.
Freiburg failed to put any notable pressure on Bayern, who were content to maintain possession without taking too many risks.
Coman provided a rare moment of excitement in the second half when his shot landed on the roof of the net.
Leon Goretzka hit the crossbar before Coman finally scored the second in the 85th.
“A deserved victory for Bayern,” said Freiburg’s Vincenzo Grifo.
While Bayern simply did what they had to do, Leverkusen produced another spectacle of attacking football in a 3-0 victory over local rivals Cologne that kept Xabi Alonso’s team on top after this round, one point ahead. from Stuttgart and two ahead of Bayern.
Víctor Bonifacio scored again. The Nigerian striker completed the scoring in the 68th minute against Cologne, who had won on their two previous visits to Leverkusen but remain bottom with just one point from their first seven games.
Jonas Hofmann opened the scoring in the 22nd when he swept the ball inside the right post after Florian Wirtz assisted him with his heel.
Leverkusen dominated the game and Alex Grimaldo passed the ball across the goal for Jeremie Frimpong to score the second 10 minutes later.
Cologne goalkeeper Marvin Schwäbe prevented Frimpong from scoring Leverkusen’s third early in the second half, but was unable to stop Hofmann’s cross for Boniface to easily finish and seal the score. It was Boniface’s seventh goal of the season, assisted by Frimpong, whose perfectly weighted pass fed Hofmann.
Boniface almost scored again at the end when his shot just missed the far post.
Eintracht Frankfurt beat promoted Heidenheim 2-0 in the last match, achieving only its second league victory of the season.
