Fire at Tamil Nadu firecracker factory kills nine

Ariyalur, Tamil Nadu:

At least nine people died in a fire at a firecracker unit in this district on Monday.

In a statement, Chief Minister MK Stalin condoled the deaths of nine people and announced cash help for their families.

The incident occurred at Viragalur village in the district in a private unit and the cause of the fire is being investigated.

Five injured people were admitted to the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital and provided special medical care, the CM said.

Stalin said he had delegated to his cabinet colleagues SS Sivasankar and CV Ganesan the task of expediting rescue and relief activities.

He announced a compensation of Rs 3 lakh each for the families of those seriously injured, Rs 1 lakh for those seriously injured and Rs 50,000 for those with simple injuries.
