Ravichandran Ashwin’s return to India’s ODI team came as a big surprise to many. An injury to Axar Patel led the selectors to include Ashwin as a replacement, and the veteran had the performances to justify selecting him. After playing an important role in India’s victory over Australia in the team’s first Cricket World Cup match, Ashwin revealed the chat he had with captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid before being included in the team .
As soon as Axar got injured, the names of Ashwin and Washington Sundar emerged as possible replacements. It was the senior player who got the nod. Elaborating on the topic, Ashwin revealed that Dravid and Rohit had already alerted him about the situation and told him that they would come back for him if the need arose.
However, jokingly, Ashwin told them “I hope you never go back to him.”
“It was more like a call for help, I was relaxing at home, I played a couple of club matches, but Rohit and Rahul (Dravid) had told me that if there was a situation we would come back to you, I just jokingly told them that I hope never. see me again (smiles),” Ashwin said in a chat on Star Sports after the end of the match against Australia at Chepauk.
Ashwin also gave his take on the wicket at the spot as he played for Chennai for a long time during different phases of his career.
“I played a lot of cricket in Chennai. It’s quite different to the Chennai pitch, with a lot of cracks. You saw how Hazlewood and the Australians bowled in the second innings. In fact, we were a little worried about how it would turn out. The crowd “We always support here. Luckily we lost the toss and Jadeja was on a roll after receiving the ball,” he said.
“It’s more than pace, it’s difficult for players to bowl at a particular speed. It’s about getting the right side spin and overspin, getting my body in position, all these things. It’s about getting it right for me. For me, it usually takes 6-8 balls to get it right,” Ashwin added.
