The morning after five members of his family were killed in an explosion at their home in Anand Nagar, Jalandhar, Inderpal Singh, 42, succumbed to burns at a local hospital.
Inderpal was admitted to the hospital in critical condition after the blast at his house around 11pm on Sunday.
Police said the family was sleeping when a problem with the compressor of a new refrigerator in the kitchen caused the nearby LPG cylinder to catch fire. Within seconds, the fire spread, killing five members. They were identified as Inderpal’s father, Yashpal Ghai, 70, his wife Ruchi Ghai, 40, and his children Mansha, 14, Diya, 12, and Akshay, 10.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Ankur Gupta said forensic teams have gathered evidence from the spot to assess the cause of the fire. “The matter is being investigated from all angles,” he said.
Investigating officer Hardev Singh said, “An explosion occurred in the refrigerator, leading to the release of gases which subsequently caught fire. The inhalation of gases proved fatal for all five members of the family.”
