Limca record holder Smartacus 2023: National online quiz tournament culminates in exciting national final | spcilvly

HT School and OTTplay celebrated India’s 77th Independence Day, as well as its never-ending appetite for quizzes, with the launch of the online qualifying round of the esteemed Smartacus National Online Quiz 2023 on August 15. This record-breaking national Limca quiz competition concluded with a gripping national final on 10 September. The top 10 participants engaged in a fascinating battle of wits, with B Sri Shivendra of PSBB Higher Secondary School, Siruseri, Kanchipuram, emerging as the national champion.

The national final was conducted via Zoom by one of India’s most renowned test teachers, the inimitable Dr. Navin Jayakumar. “It was a complete Magnificent Ten that competed in the National Final. True to form, it turned out to be a close game that kept the momentum of excitement building until the tiebreaker that decided who was first among equals. It was a pleasure to conduct this quiz with the brightest young minds in the country,” he gushes.

The “Magnificent Ten” defeated 90 other equally talented participants in the national semifinal, which took place on August 20 on the Kahoot! platform. The national final included 40 questions spread over 4 rounds. Questions were drawn from a wide variety of topics including history, geography, sports, language and literature, science, arts and entertainment, culture and lifestyle, and general knowledge. They challenged students to dig deeper and think to get the right answers. The test went down to the wire and ended with a nail-biting tiebreaker.

Some of the participants in the National Grand Final included questions in which the then Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee added two words in the 90s, on a momentous occasion, to a famous 1965 slogan by Lal Bahadur Shastri saluting soldiers and soldiers Indians. farmers (‘Jai Vigyan’, added to “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” during the Pokhran nuclear tests in 1998); the identity of the great Indian after whom the late Indian world quiz champion Vikram Joshi (Dr. Vikram Sarabhai) is named; name of the mythical treasure sought by Monkey D. After the event, prolific quiz master and co-founder of HT Labs, Avinash Mudaliar, reiterated the quiz’s commitment to broadening the mental horizons of the participants in a healthy and holistic manner that is not bound by any didactic mode of teaching. He states: “To know that we know what we know and to know that we do not know what we do not know, that is true knowledge,” said the great Nicholas Copernicus. Our attempt with Smartacus is to ensure that every child has access to the knowledge they need in a format that is fun, enjoyable and not like a textbook.” This goal seems to have hit home with the finalists, with many of them reaffirming the wisdom and skills they acquired throughout the questionnaire.

“Smartacus 2023 was a challenging and uplifting quiz that tested participants’ knowledge and critical thinking. I learned a lot from the quiz and would highly recommend it to other students,” says national champion B Sri Shivendra. The runner-up, Sreenandh Sudheesh from GMHSS Calicut College Campus, Malappuram, also receives praise for the event. Anumegha Dutta, from Thakur Public School in Mumbai, completes the top 3. Despite failing to make it to the top 3, 5th ranked Abhra K Dubey from Dewan Public School, Meerut and 8th ranked Yash Aggarwal from DAV Public School, Pitam Pura, Delhi show a winning attitude. “Reaching the top 10 was an exciting achievement. Overall, competing against the best minds fueled the passion within me to continue learning and participate in more events,” states Aggarwal. Similarly, for Abhra, competing in the national finals and sharing the stage with one of the “top experts in Tests of India” was a “dream come true.”

Dr Navin Jayakumar was supported by fellow quizmaster Meghashyam Shirodkar who acted as host and supported the Quizmaster for the national finals. Shirodkar expressed his joy and optimism after the finale, quoting the poet Alexander Pope: “A little learning is a dangerous thing; Drink deep or don’t taste the Pierian spring.” He further says, “Interaction with Top 10 National Finalists of OTTplay Premium Presents Smartacus 2023 made it abundantly clear that the youth of India today have drank the most of the nectar of knowledge . and they can summon it at will to fulfill their purpose whenever the need arises.
