President Droupadi Murmu is likely to inaugurate the $15 crore skywalk and remodeled Parvati Bhawan during his visit to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Katra on October 12, officials said.
The decision to remodel the walkway was made following a stampede on January 1, 2022, which claimed the lives of 12 pilgrims. At that time, lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha constituted a probe panel. The 200-meter walkway was extended by 50 meters.
“The length of the walkway has been increased near the Sridhar Bhawan lift. Initially it was planned to use the second floor hallway. However, it was observed that the building was old and modernization was not advisable,” officials said.
The walkway will be a 2.5 meter wide pedestrian flyover at a height of 20 feet above the existing track to serve as an entry route for pilgrims.
