Police said the suspect, Mohammad Shaukeen, was wounded in police shooting after he snatched the service pistol from an officer who was escorting him to a local health center and fired at the team.

Ghaziabad deputy commissioner of police (rural) Vivek Chandra Yadav said Shaukeen was being taken to a community health center in Modinagar on Thursday night for his medical examination when the incident occurred. It is not clear why the medical examination was carried out late at night. He allegedly attacked the girl, leading to her arrest around 4 p.m.

“There he snatched the service pistol from one of our sub-inspectors who was accompanying him and tried to flee. In the attempt, he opened fire on the police with the stolen service pistol. The police team also opened retaliatory fire. A bullet hit him in the leg… He was overpowered and the service pistol was also recovered,” Yadav said.

Two criminal cases were registered against him, Yadav added. In the first case for attacking the girl, he has been booked for attempted murder. A second case was registered for attempting to kill the police officers and snatching their pistol.

Yadav said Shaukeen’s motive for attacking the class 9 student is not very clear.

The senior police officer said Shaukeen had advised her father to change schools, but the girl’s family did not take his advice that the girl not go to that particular school very seriously.

Police said they were yet to determine why Shaukeen was against the school, the nature of his relationship with the girl’s family and the provocation to harm her. “We are waiting for the girl to recover before taking the statement from her,” Yadav said.

Shaukeen separated from his wife about three years ago and lived alone in the house next to the victim. Shaukeen has a young daughter who lives with his mother.

Police said additional police force has been deployed in the area to maintain law and order as the victim and the suspect are from different communities.
