At least seven people are feared dead after the car they were traveling in was buried under heavy debris caused by a landslide on the Dharchula-Gunji highway in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, on Sunday, a senior official said.
Bhupendra Singh Mahar, district disaster management officer (DDMO), Pithoragarh, said the incident took place around 1 pm.
He said, “Rescue teams from SDRF, police, ITBP and army are involved in the rescue operation at the landslide site. However, we had to suspend the rescue and search operation due to poor visibility after sunset. Two JCB machines were involved in the operation, but the landslide was so large that they could not rescue a single person from the buried car.”
He added that the vehicle was heading from Nabi to Dharchula and even picked up passengers along the way.
According to an eyewitness, Prakash Ronkali of Rongkong village in Dharchula block, the unfortunate Bolero was running in front of his vehicle.
